Competition Job Descriptions

Organizer

  1. Ensures that everyone has taken part in the Safety Course prior to assisting in the competition
  2. Ensures that everyone possesses the required certifications that their positions requires
  3. Ensures that everyone has received a written copy of their position and responsibilities during the event

Timers

Boat/Shore Timer

  1. Ensures that all competitors are notified as to the start of their warm up time
  2. Ensures that all competitors know when zero time has started
  3. Ensures that no competitor enters the water before their official 45 min warm-up has begun

Transition Zone Timer

  1. Lets each competitor know when it is their turn to enter the transition zone
  2. Ensures that each competitor has an official depth gauge on

Competition Zone Timer

  1. give countdown to official top for all competitors
  2. relay dive time as it passes to the safety freedivers
  3. double check line depth and competitors lanyards are attached as each competitor approaches the competition line

Safety Freedivers

Primary Safety Diver-Competition Line

  1. Sends the competitor’s tag down to the bottom plate when the depth is properly adjusted
  2. Meet the competitor between 15m & 25m and remain in reach of him/her up to the surface
  3. Continue to monitor each competitor for no less then 1 minute following a performance or until released by the judges
  4. Escort diver needing medical attention to the medical station if they are the rescuer

Secondary Safety Diver-Competition Line

  1. Ensures that each competitor has a lanyard on (athletes will supply their own lanyard) and is clipped onto the competition line before the dive and then unclip it after the dive
  2. Meets the competitor between 10m & 20m and remain in reach of him/her up to the surface
  3. Continues to monitor each competitor for no less then 1 minute following a performance or until released by the judges
  4. Escorts diver needing medical attention to the medical station if they are the rescuer
  5. Takes over as primary safety if the primary safety must leave the competition line at any time

Alternate Safety Diver – Competition Line

  1. Adjusts the competition line to the correct depth for each competitor
  2. Removes the official depth gauge at the end of each performance and return it to the Transition Zone Timer
  3. Takes over as secondary safety if either the primary or secondary safety must leave the competition line at any time
  4. Will still be responsible for carrying out their primary duties even if they take over another safety position

Warm-up Line

  1. Be surface safety for competitors warming-up
  2. Be freediving safety for those competitors that ask for an under water spotter during their warm-ups
  3. Reports any LOMC or BO to the judges before that competitor moves to the competition line

Safety Scuba Divers

Warm-Up Lines

  1. Be ready to respond to an underwater emergency on one of the warm-up lines

Competition Line

  1. Hover in view of the competition line at their predetermined depth (so that they can see the competitor) while making sure that their bubbles are off of the line as not to hinder the freedivers performance
  2. Time the diver to insure that safety protocols are put into action if the diver does not return from depth in the required amount of time
  3. Witness and record (on a slate) any line violations and report them to the judges after the dive
  4. Respond appropriately to a freediver that needs their assistance at depth or at anytime a long the dive
