December 2000 Lions Bay Marina Underwater Cleanup
The underwater cleanup at the Lions Bay Marina was
organized by the
Underwater Council of British Columbia.
and was the first environmental venture
for CAFA freedivers.
The organizers weren't quite sure initially how things would work out with having
freedivers in the water but it quickly became apparent that
having freedivers greatly improved the efficiency of the whole operation.
Divers on SCUBA could stay on the bottom while freedivers visited
occasionally to lift full bags of junk and return with empty bags.
Freedivers were also able to independently locate and remove their share
of bottom debris as well.
You can find a freediver's perspective on the cleanup on Tom Lightfoot's freediving site. The UCBC has photos of the event and a story on their own site.
